WASSERFRISCHE OBSTFELDERSCHMIEDE BERGBAHN
Schwarzatal, Germany | 1.150 m² | 2026
The Obstfelderschmiede project is part of the “Slow Landscape – Summer Retreat” strategy, jointly developed by MAN MADE LAND and Fabulism to revitalize the Schwarzatal region as a destination for recreation and gentle tourism. Along the panoramic trail network, selected sites are enhanced to strengthen the region’s landscape, cultural, and social qualities. At the foot of the historic Oberweißbach Mountain Railway, between the station, the local restaurant, and the Schwarza River, the previously underused forecourt is being transformed into an inviting public space. As a point of arrival and meeting place, it connects different transport routes with the river landscape, creating new opportunities for relaxation and social interaction. The central design objective is to open up the square toward the Schwarza. Through the careful clearing of riverside areas, new views of the water and the historic wooden bridge are established. A long bench along the river, generous picnic areas, and individual seating elements invite visitors to experience the landscape from different perspectives. At the same time, the space accommodates small events and community activities. The design draws on the characteristic materials and vegetation of the Schwarzatal valley. Regionally typical slate, timber, and permeable paving define the public realm. Wet meadows, species-rich nutrient-poor grasslands, and drought-tolerant perennial and herb plantings promote biodiversity and create varied spaces for relaxation. The result is a vibrant arrival point and meeting place at Obstfelderschmiede, bringing together mobility, nature experiences, and recreation while making the concept of a contemporary summer retreat in the Schwarzatal tangible and accessible.
