MAXIMILIANSTRAßE
Nuremberg, Germany | 1 ha BGF 24.000 m² | COMPETITION 2025 1. Prize
Under the working title “Quiet Center – Lively Edge,” a distinctive urban development is taking shape on the site of the former VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft depot, in the immediate vicinity of Nuremberg’s historically significant Palace of Justice on Fürther Straße, the site of the Nuremberg Trials. The approximately 10,000 m² competition site is being transformed into a mixed-use neighborhood offering high-quality housing and open spaces. The retained existing buildings—the former savings bank building, the residential building at Maximilianstraße 35, and the former workshop building at Fürther Straße 140—will be upgraded and integrated into a new urban block structure. The resulting layout combines a quiet, sheltered inner zone with an active, urban perimeter. The enclosed block defines a centrally located courtyard protected from traffic noise, while lively ground-floor frontages accommodating commercial uses, a daycare center, and neighborhood facilities activate the surrounding public spaces. Generous passageways establish connections with the surrounding urban fabric and promote fresh-air circulation.
A new public square forms the heart of the neighborhood, serving as a local meeting place, an important stepping stone within the wider green-space network, and a connecting link between the Palace of Justice, the new urban development, and Fürther Straße.
