HAMBURG BERGEDORF INNOVATION PARC

Hamburg, Germany | 40 ha | COMPETITION: 2026, 1. Prize

The master plan concept translates Bergedorf’s aquatic heritage into a climate-resilient innovation park. A fluid design language creates an organic landscape that encourages creativity, circulation, and spontaneous encounters. Water management forms the backbone of the design, providing drainage, regulating the water balance, and protecting the elevated development areas against flooding. Rainwater management becomes an experiential recreational feature through a vibrant waterfront garden and a decentralized network of rain gardens, tree-based infiltration systems, and optional gravel infiltration trenches along the “Lifeline.” Site-responsive design and climate-resilient planting minimize maintenance requirements, while underground cisterns store roof runoff for use during dry periods. The programmatic concept combines four typologies—Social, Sports, Outreach, and Recharge—which connect major activity hubs with smaller, intimate spaces. Key focus areas include the Lifeline, a blue-green parkway featuring permeable surfaces and flexible programming. Campus Park South preserves reedbed habitats and creates new floodplain areas, while Campus Park Central functions as a waterfront garden promenade with water terraces, bioengineered bank stabilization, and phytoremediation. Campus Park North serves as an active sports hub, featuring terraced amphitheater seating. Finally, the Linear Park integrates historic industrial railway tracks into green pathways, while the Biotope Park protects and showcases the existing ecosystem through a minimal-intervention approach, using elevated timber boardwalks and meeting pavilions.
