AMAGER BAKKE | Copenhagen, Denmark | 16 ha | COMPETITION: 1st prize, 2010

The new waste incineration plant will be an architectural icon and an exemplary specimen of resource management and energy production. Located in an industrial area near the city center of Copenhagen, the roof of the new Amagerforbrænding is transformed into a 31,000 m2 ski paradise. Waste incineration plants are re-defined through the extension of the existing leisure facilities, creating a new type of industrial site. To the north of the building, a large park area, following the topography of the ski slope, is planned: if the roof is the glacier, then the park is the green alpine meadow!
