Die (historischen) Berliner U- und S-Bahnhöfe sind als robust-elegante Eisenfachwerkkonstruktionen Landmarken im Bild der Stadt und Identifikationspunkt für ganze Nachbarschaften. Der „Berliner Block“ weist im Innenstadtbereich eine Traufhöhe von 22m auf und die höheren Häuser Berlins treten zumeist in Ensembles auf. Durch die Rekombination und Neuinterpretation dieser lokalen Archetypen auf dem Grundstück der Urbanen Mitte am Gleisdreieck generieren wir ein zugleich Berlin-typisches, aber dennoch überraschend neuartiges und zeitgemäßes Quartier – ein ganz besonderes Stück Berlin. Das Quartier ist auf die Bedürfnisse von Fußgängern und Radfahrern zugeschnitten. Innerhalb des Quartiers kann alles binnen fünf Minuten Fußweg erreicht werden. Dazu werden alle an das Grundstück anliegenden Wege und Wegeverbindungen (Wege im und am Park, sowie Strassen) über das Grundstück verlängert und mit den Eingängen der bestehenden und zukünftigen Haltestellen, sowie den Eingangstoren zu den Höfen des Bahnhofs Gleisdreieck direkt verbunden. So entsteht ein kontinuierliches Netzwerk aus Stadträumen, bestehend aus Orten der Bewegung und des zufälligen einander Treffens: den Passagen; und Orten der Ruhe und des Aufenthalts: den Plätzen und Höfen.

Zwischen den Passagen, Plätzen und Höfen sind die neun Baufelder gesetzt, so dass sie als allseitig vom Stadtraum umflossene Solitäre dennoch ein klar erkennbares Ensemble und Kontinuum bilden. Zwei langgestreckte Stadträume in Nord-Süd-Richtung bilden das Rückgrat zwischen Gleisdreieck-Bahnhof und der neuen Bebauung. Daran angegliedert finden sich dreizehn unterschiedlich gestaltete Plätze und Höfe, von denen einige schon heute existieren. Zusammen bilden sie ein kontinuierliches Stadtraummosaik, das mit seinen unterschiedlichen Qualitäten über den Tageslauf ganz unterschiedlichen NutzerInnenansprüchen gerecht wird: Stadtgarten, überdachter Sportplatz, Wäldchen, Stadtplantage, Pausenhof, Amphiplaza, After-Work-Garten, Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund-Platz, Entrée… Gestalterisch nimmt das Stadtraummosaik in Nord-Süd-Richtung Elemente der Eiszeitlandschaft des Berlin-Warschau-Urstromtals mit seinen Sanddünen und Toteisseen auf. In Ost-West-Richtung wird der Übergang vom dicht bebauten Bahnhof zum Landschaftsraum des Parks als Gradient inszeniert. Auf Höhe der Sockelbauten (22m) gibt es grüne Dachgärten und Terrassen, so daß das Prinzip der verknüpften Freiräume auch dreidimensional wahrnehmbar ist.

Berlin’s (historic) underground and suburban train stations are robustly elegant iron lattice structures. These cityscape landmarks serve as points of identification for entire neighborhoods. The „Berlin Block“ has an eaves height of 22m in the inner city area with the taller houses mostly appearing in ensembles. By recombining and reinterpreting these local archetypes on the site of the Urban Center at Gleisdreieck, we generate a neighborhood that is at once typical of Berlin, yet surprisingly novel and contemporary – a very special piece of Berlin. The quarter is tailored to the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. Within the quarter, everything can be reached in a five-minute walk. To this end, all paths and connections (paths in and around the park, as well as streets) adjacent to the site will be extended across the site and directly connected to the entrances of the existing and future train stops, as well as the entrance gates to the courtyards of the Gleisdreieck train station. Thus, a continuous network of urban spaces is formed, consisting of places of movement and chance meeting: the passages; and places of rest and residence: the squares and courtyards.

Between the passages, squares, and courtyards the nine building sites are placed so that they form a recognizable ensemble and continuum as solitaires surrounded by the urban space. Two elongated urban spaces in the north-south direction form the backbone between Gleisdreieck station and the new development. Attached to these are thirteen uniquely designed squares and courtyards, some of which already exist today. Together, they form a continuous urban mosaic, which, with its different qualities over the day, meets very different user requirements: city garden, covered sports field, grove, city orchard, break yard, amphi-plaza, after-work garden, „Morgenstund hat Gold im Mund-Platz,“ entrée… In terms of design, the urban space mosaic in the north-south direction takes up elements of the glacial landscape of the Berlin-Warsaw glacial valley with its dunes and dead lakes. The east-west direction transitions from the densely built-up station to the landscape space of the park, staged as a gradient. At the height of the base buildings (22m), there are green roof gardens and terraces; so that the principle of linked open spaces can also be perceived three-dimensionally.
